Black Hole Boogie

A 90-second VR space-rescue game built in Sweden with hand tracking, zero-gravity interaction, and spatial audio.

Project video

Black Hole Boogie is a single-player VR space-action game created in Sweden by a multinational team. During a 90-second mission, players rescue astronauts and defend them from asteroids and other hazards around a black hole.

Interaction and implementation

  • Hand-tracked slap, punch, grab, and gun gestures using Meta XR SDK.
  • A zero-gravity environment with randomized astronauts, asteroids, and aliens.
  • Shader and VFX Graph effects for the black hole and weapon interactions.
  • Spatial audio that responds to the player’s position and orientation.

Constraints

The team adapted interactions for differences in player height and limb length. Visual effects also had to fit within Meta Quest 3 performance limits, and the gun gesture required iteration because hand occlusion reduced tracking reliability.

Working across cultures and disciplines made the development process as important as the final artifact.
